PING is a two-week long* physics summer program —with some sites having the option of a year-long ongoing research component —aimed to encourage more students into going into STEAM fields, specifically physics. This program is for Undergraduate students and High school students. 

 

Prior to the program, Undergraduates students arrive a few months before their high school counterparts, being able to learn the research project they will be working on for PING, as well as work on their own research projects with their advisor, which they will later present at national conferences. The purpose of the Undergraduate students arriving before the high school students is to make sure they are accurately trained and familiar with the research topic being worked on for PING, as well as having ample time to develop their own personal research.

In the last weeks of July is when the actual program starts, high schools students will come to the program and be taught and mentored by the undergraduate students. Since the undergraduate student will have been trained up until now in this research project, they are now the ones teaching the high school students and answering questions/problem solving, making this program completely student led.

The last day of the program is reserved for the "PING Workshop", where students in the PING program come together to present their research they've been working on for the past couple weeks. Students are encouraged to join in person if able and within the vicinity of the hosting institution, or join virtually. This presentation will be the same one presented at national conferences the students will attend such, as NSBP and APS.

This program is open nationally to students from states other than where the host institution is, with most PING sites supplying transportation, flights, meals, and housing paid for by the program! Some branches however may only accept local students, or may only provide housing and meals. Please look at each specific branch to match your needs and interest!
