Create engaging articles and written content for PONG while collaborating with the Communications Coordinator and Events Coordinator and helping keep our website and other materials informative and up to date.
Content Writer

Volunteer Position — Unpaid
​
The Content Writer will help tell PONG’s story through clear, engaging, and meaningful written content. This person will write articles, student highlights, program descriptions, event materials, website content, social media descriptions, and other communications that help students, families, partners, and the broader community understand who PONG is and what we do.
​
This is a highly collaborative role. The Content Writer will work closely with the Communications & Social Media Coordinator, Website Coordinator, Graphic Designer, and Events Coordinator to make sure PONG’s written content is accurate, engaging, consistent, and effectively communicates the work being done across the organization.
​
The Content Writer will also have opportunities to work independently by helping PONG build relationships with local news organizations, publications, magazines, and other media outlets. This may include reaching out to journalists, submitting articles or stories, helping promote PONG’s programs, and finding new ways to get PONG’s name and mission in front of the community.

What You’ll Do
​

Write articles and stories about PONG’s programs, activities, accomplishments, opportunities, and impact.

Work with the Communications & Social Media Coordinator to develop descriptions, captions, announcements, and other written content for social media.

Work with the Communications & Social Media Coordinator to publish and promote articles about PONG programs, events, students, and other organizational updates.

Work with the Website Coordinator to write and update program descriptions, opportunity descriptions, homepage highlights, announcements, and other website content.

Help ensure that information on the PONG website is detailed, accurate, engaging, and kept up to date.

Write student highlights and spotlights that recognize students, their accomplishments, interests, experiences, and involvement with PONG.

Work with students and PONG team members to gather information and stories that can be turned into articles, highlights, or other content.

Work with the Graphic Designer to develop written content for flyers, promotional materials, announcements, and other visual communications.

Work with the Events Coordinator to create written materials for conferences, events, programs, and other PONG activities.

Help develop articles and other written pieces that PONG may submit to magazines, newsletters, publications, or other media outlets.

Research opportunities for PONG to be featured in local news, publications, blogs, magazines, and other media.

Reach out to local news organizations, journalists, editors, and other relevant contacts to help share PONG’s story and build relationships with the community.

Help develop press releases, media pitches, announcements, and other materials that can be shared with news organizations when appropriate.

Help maintain a consistent voice and message across PONG’s website, social media, publications, and other communications.

Collaborate with the broader PONG team to make sure written content accurately represents the organization, its programs, and the people involved.

What We’re Looking For
​
We’re looking for someone who is a strong writer, creative, curious, organized, and interested in telling meaningful stories. You do not need to meet every requirement below, but experience with writing, communications, journalism, or content creation is strongly preferred.

Helpful experience and skills include:

Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and communication skills.

Experience writing articles, blog posts, newsletters, social media content, school publications, or other forms of written communication.

Ability to adapt writing style for different audiences and platforms.

Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.

Ability to interview or communicate with students, volunteers, staff, and other members of the PONG community to gather information for stories.

Experience with journalism, school newspapers, magazines, newsletters, public relations, or communications is a plus.

Experience communicating with local news organizations, journalists, editors, or other media outlets is strongly preferred but not required.

Networking and relationship-building skills are a major plus.

Ability to work collaboratively with the Communications & Social Media Coordinator, Website Coordinator, Graphic Designer, Events Coordinator, and other PONG team members.

Ability to stay organized, manage multiple writing projects, and meet deadlines.

Familiarity with website content management systems, social media, or digital publishing is helpful but not required.

Experience with nonprofit, education, science, or student organizations is helpful, but not required.

Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who is excited to contribute, willing to learn, and interested in helping build something from the ground up.

About the Position
​
This is a volunteer, unpaid position with PONG. As a growing nonprofit, we are still building our programs, systems, and resources, and our current positions are volunteer opportunities.
​
In return, this role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in writing, journalism, communications, public relations, digital content, nonprofit storytelling, and community outreach while working as part of a collaborative team. You’ll have the opportunity to build a writing portfolio, contribute published work, develop professional connections, help tell students’ stories, and play an important role in helping PONG establish its voice and presence in the community.
