Communications & Social Media Coordinator

Volunteer Position — Unpaid

​

The Communications & Social Media Coordinator will help shape how PONG communicates with students, families, volunteers, partners, and the broader community. This person will manage PONG’s social media presence, keep our platforms active and up to date, monitor trends and analytics, and help identify new platforms or communication strategies that could help PONG reach more people.

​

This role will also help maintain PONG’s online community, including our Discord server. The coordinator will help keep Discord organized, active, welcoming, and up to date while working with the team to determine what channels, features, bots, and tools could make the community more useful for students and members.

This is a highly collaborative role. The Communications & Social Media Coordinator will work closely with other members of the PONG team to make sure our programs, opportunities, events, and stories are being shared effectively and consistently.

What You’ll Do

​

  • Manage and maintain PONG’s social media accounts, including creating and scheduling posts and keeping information current.

  • Monitor social media trends, engagement, and analytics to understand what content is reaching our audience and how PONG can improve its online presence.

  • Research emerging platforms, trends, and communication strategies and recommend new opportunities that may benefit PONG.

  • Monitor and help maintain PONG’s Discord community, including keeping channels organized, information current, and the community welcoming and engaging.

  • Help identify and implement useful Discord features, bots, integrations, and other tools that could improve PONG’s online community.

  • Work with the Content Writer to develop captions, descriptions, announcements, articles, and other written content for social media and communications.

  • Work with the Graphic Designer to create flyers, promotional graphics, announcements, and other visual content for social media and outreach.

  • Work with the Website Coordinator to identify information that should be added or updated on the website and content that should be highlighted on the homepage.

  • Work with the Events Coordinator to promote upcoming conferences, events, and other PONG activities before, during, and after they take place.

  • Help share PONG’s programs, student opportunities, accomplishments, stories, and other updates with our community.

  • Maintain a consistent voice and presence across PONG’s communication platforms.

  • Help develop new ideas for how PONG can tell its story, reach students, and grow its community.

  • Collaborate with the broader PONG team to coordinate communications and make sure everyone’s work is represented accurately and effectively.

What We’re Looking For

​

We’re looking for someone who is creative, organized, communicative, and interested in helping PONG grow. You do not need to meet every requirement below, but experience with social media or communications is strongly preferred.

​

​

Helpful experience and skills include:

​

  • Previous experience managing or creating content for social media accounts.

  • Familiarity with platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, X, or other social media platforms.

  • An understanding of social media trends, engagement, and analytics.

  • Experience using Discord, especially managing or organizing a Discord server.

  • Familiarity with Discord bots, moderation tools, roles, permissions, integrations, or other server-management features is a plus.

  • Strong written communication skills and attention to detail.

  • Creativity and an interest in finding new ways to communicate with an audience.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate with team members across different roles.

  • Ability to stay organized, meet deadlines, and keep track of multiple projects.

  • Experience with social media management, analytics, or Discord management tools is a plus, but not required.

  • Experience with nonprofit, education, science, or student organizations is helpful, but not required.

Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who is excited to contribute, willing to learn, and interested in helping build something from the ground up.

About the Position

​

This is a volunteer, unpaid position with PONG. As a growing nonprofit, we are still building our programs, systems, and resources, and our current positions are volunteer opportunities.

​

In return, this role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in communications, social media management, digital outreach, analytics, online community management, and nonprofit communications while working as part of a collaborative team. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute ideas, take ownership of projects, build your portfolio, and help shape how PONG connects with the next generation.
